The EF01 module provides the dimensions of smooth circular flanges of type 01 to DIN EN 1092-1, edition 2002-05, as a set of standard tables. Type 01 is the plain slip-on plate flange for sliding onto and welding to the pipe – the simplest and most widely used design in piping and process equipment engineering for low and medium pressure ratings. Via the nominal pressure (PN) and the nominal size (DN), the module delivers all standardized dimensions: inside (bore) diameter, outside diameter and flange thickness, bolt circle diameter, bolt hole diameter with number of bolts, and the associated thread.

Important: the underlying edition DIN EN 1092-1:2002-05 has been withdrawn and replaced by later editions of EN 1092-1 (currently the 2018 edition with amendments). For new designs, the currently valid edition should be used; for re-analyses, spare parts procurement and the documentation of existing plants fabricated to the 2002 edition, the table values of this module remain relevant, especially since the main dimensions have been carried over largely unchanged.

In practice, the module serves as a quick dimensional reference when designing flanged joints and as the geometry source for the analytical flange calculation to DIN EN 13445-3 Clause 11 (module EN11).

Scope

  • Smooth circular flanges type 01

Typical workflow

  1. Select nominal pressure and nominal size

The starting point is the nominal pressure (PN rating) and the nominal size (DN) of the pipeline. These two quantities uniquely define the table entry in EN 1092-1.

  2. Read off the main dimensions

The module delivers the inside (bore) diameter, the outside diameter and the flange thickness of the type 01 flange, as well as the dimensions of the raised face (diameter and depth of the facing form).

  3. Determine the bolting

Each PN/DN combination is associated with a bolt circle diameter, bolt hole diameter, number of bolts and the bolt thread. This defines the joint completely for assembly.

  4. Hand over to the strength calculation

For the analytical verification (internal pressure, external loads, tightness), the table dimensions are passed to the flange calculation per DIN EN 13445-3 Clause 11. The tables of EN 1092-1 themselves contain pressure-temperature ratings but do not replace an individual verification for special loads.

Frequently asked questions

What characterizes flange type 01 to EN 1092-1?

Type 01 is the plain plate flange for welding: a flat flange disc without a forged hub, which is slipped over the pipe end and welded with fillet welds inside and outside. It is inexpensive but less load-bearing than the welding neck flange with hub (type 11), which is why it is used mainly in the lower pressure ratings and where loading is not cyclic.

May I still use the table values of the 2002-05 edition?

The 2002-05 edition of DIN EN 1092-1 has been withdrawn; the current edition is binding for new designs. The mating dimensions (bolt circle, bolt pattern, outside diameter) have remained largely stable across the editions, so components stay compatible. There have, however, been changes in details such as facing forms, material assignments and pressure-temperature tables – for new designs, always check against the valid edition.

Does selecting a flange from the PN/DN table replace the flange calculation?

Within the pressure-temperature ratings of EN 1092-1, the standard flange is considered adequately dimensioned as long as only internal pressure and normal operating conditions act. As soon as substantial additional piping loads, frequent load cycles, special gaskets or media with elevated tightness requirements are present, an analytical flange calculation to DIN EN 13445-3 Clause 11 or EN 1591-1 is required.
