Overview and scope

B1 calculates required wall thicknesses and allowable pressures for thin-walled cylindrical and spherical shells under internal pressure. Confirm the applicable code edition and scope before use.

Technical drawing of a cylindrical shell under internal pressure

Calculation objective

The module evaluates operating and test cases from geometry, pressure, material strength, safety factors, weld factor and allowances. The larger required thickness governs. For an executed wall thickness it also calculates allowable pressures and geometric values.

Cylindrical shell

Design type 1. Length V10 is required for volume and weight values.

Spherical shell

Design type 2. Cylinder length is not required.

Boundaries

  • Use B10 for thick-walled cylinders outside the B1 scope.
  • Opening reinforcement verification belongs to B9.
  • External-pressure buckling is not covered.
